Landscape rock and mulch products are both popular ground covers for landscapes. Mulch products require topdressing every year to maintain their fresh appearance. Landscape rock on the other hand can go for years without having to be top-dressed or replaced. Landscape rock comes in many sizes and types. Most landscapes use landscape rock that is either 1″ or 2″ in size. Landscape rock that is 1″ in size is classified as small rock. Landscape rock that is 2″ in size is classified as large rock. Pea gravel refers to rock that is 1/2 or smaller which resembles the size of a pea. Pond rock is generally 6″ to 10″ in size. Pea gravel and pond rock are not commonly installed as a ground cover products in landscape beds.
The most popular type of landscape rock in Iowa is river rock. This rock is readily available and is cost-effective. Depending on the river vain that the river rock is mined from, the colors will very. Quarries that produce river rock in eastern Iowa usually have white, brown and grey rock blends. Up north, river rock can turn to purple or pink colors. Some specialized rock products are also available for landscape installation. Again, depending on where you live these products my be purchased in bulk. Some specialized landscape rock products include: slate, marble chips, indian stone and lava rock. Products such as slate and marble chips can come from recycled trimmings. Products such as lava rock are usually sold by the bag because they are not readily available for bulk purchase.

Landscape rock in bags can be purchased at almost every do it yourself store. If you purchase landscape rock by the bag, be aware that the cost is substantially higher than purchasing in bulk. If you choose to purchase landscape rock in bulk, most landscape nursery’s or local quarries will carry what you need. Most landscape nursery’s and quarries will offer delivery if it is not practice to pick up the rock yourself.
