Deer repellent can aid in deterring deer from feeding on your trees and other plant material.  The best means of keeping deer’s from feeding on your plants is to install plants that are not actively sought after by deer’s.  If you already have deer susceptible plants installed in your landscape, there are few things that you can do to help mitigate the damage.  Consider fencing in your yard if it is feasible.  Even though deer can scale most home fences, the deterrent is usually too great and the deer will move on to the next property.  If fencing is not an option, it is also possible to treat your plants with a deer repellent.  Deer repellents are sprayed on the foliage of the plant to reduce feeding by deer and other animals.

Deer Repellent

Deer repellents that work better than others.

There is no cure-all deer repellent product that will completely remove the chances of a deer feeding, but you can greatly reduce the potential.  There are numerous products on the market that are designed to reduce deer feeding.  Some of the produces include ingredients such as: egg’s, animal urine and animal blood.  There was a study conducted by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station which tested several product ingredients.  The conclusion of the study was that egg based products were more effective that other ingredients.  Rotten eggs produced a similar smell to rotten meat, which kept deer away because of their instinct of a predator eating rotten flesh.  The study also concluded that the frequency of applying deer repellent products also increased or decreased their effectiveness.  Generally the products should be re-applied after every hard rain storm.  If no rain is present most products will leave their scent for three or four weeks.  It is also good to switch your products up so that you are not constantly applying the same thing.  Deer and other animals become immune to the product smell and may be more likely to attempt feeding if this happens.
