Autumn Joy Sedum is a flowering perennial plant. The flower clusters of this perennial form in the spring and develop all summer long. The flower clusters are light minty green in color in the spring and summer. When cooler fall temperatures set in, the flower clusters turn from minty green to salmon color. As fall temperatures progress, the flowers become dark pink. The stems of this flower are fragile and will not well recover if damaged. Since this plant is a perennial, new stems will form in the spring. Autumn Joy Sedum grows in clumps. The flower works well when planted as stand-alone plants or in mass plantings. This plant is relatively drought resistant and does well in full sun exposure.
The flowers of this plant attract butterflies because of the large flower clumps. The stalks of this perennial plant should be cut down in the fall so that new growth can come in the spring. Leave approximately 2 inches of the stems from the ground level to help protect the new plant growth in the spring. This perennial plant should be divided every few years to promote new growth.
