Vinca Minor

Vinca Minor is a great ground cover perennial plant that is commonly used in shady areas.  Vinca Minor blooms in the late spring and continues blooming all summer long.  The purplish-blue flowers contrast the glossy green foliage of this perennial plant.  Flowers on Vinca Minor have five lavender petals that are separated by a gap. A cone-like center of the flower is white.

The leaves of Vinca Minor are oval and grow off of a sturdy vine. Vinca vine will weave in and out of other plants in your landscape.  This vine does not grow and creep upward though. It stays close to the ground. This ground cover plant will get about 6″ tall when it is fully mature.  Since this is a ground cover plant, it will continue to spread indefinitely.  Do not plant this in an area that you do not want it to take over.  It is possible to cut the plant back and keep it tamed if done on a regular basis.

Vinca can also be used as an accent plant. This plant can be installed in planters to add some cascading character. The foliage and flowers of this vine stand out in any application. Vinca prefers shade to part sun areas to thrive. Watering may be necessary during times of extreme heat and drought. Another great feature of Vinca is that it is deer resistant. If you are looking for an all-around quality ground cover perennial, consider installing Vinca Minor in your landscape project.
