Dense Spreading Yew is a compact evergreen shrub. This yew variety is slow growing. This evergreen can be installed as a stand-alone plant or grown into a hedge. Dense Spreading Yew grows well in part shade to full sun areas. Most yew shrubs are resistant to winter burn. This plant requires minimal maintenance to keep it looking healthy. During extreme heat or drought conditions, this plant may need watering on a regular basis.
Yew produces small cherry looking berries. The berries are soft and become slimy when squeezed. There is a seed pit in the center of the berry. The foliage on this shrub is glossy. The long needles are soft and smooth. Dense Spreading Yew will mature around four feet tall and wide. If pruned on an annual basis, the plant can be trained into a globe. When pruning this plant make sure that you do not take too much growth off at one time. Over-pruning will lead to bare areas. Most evergreen shrubs such as the yew will not recover from excessive pruning.
