Japanese Tree Lilac is a great ornamental tree to use in your landscape. Native to Japan, this beautiful tree produces abundant flower clusters in late spring and early summer. The flower clusters are creamy white and appear to be pointed when looking from a distance. Flowers on this tree tiny. Many tiny flowers form a cotton ball-like appearance 6″ to 12″ large. The flowers are fragrant, just like any other lilac plant.
The leaves this plant are oval and come to a point. Foliage on this tree is smooth to the touch and glossy. Japanese Tree Lilacs attract birds because of their denseness. This variety can be trained as a tree or grown into a large shrub. When planted in rows, these trees can make a spectacular tree hedge. This tree is resistant to mildew, scale, and borer. Mature Japanese Tree Lilacs reach about 25 feet tall and wide. This tree does prefer moist, but well-drained soil. During times of drought or extreme heat, this tree will require watering.
Be aware that bacterial blight and leaf spots are possible with this variety. This tree does, however, have excellent resistance to powdery mildew, scale, and borers. Overall, this is an excellent ornamental tree that can be planted in most Midwest landscapes.
