Chicory is a summer perennial weed that is commonly found in lawns and ditches along roads. This weed prefers to grow in thin lawns, so the best method of control is to keep your lawn thick and healthy. The leaves of Chicory are green with a dark red to purple vein running down the center of the leaf. In its early growing stages, this weed is similar in appearance to that of the dandelion. Once the plant matures, there are many distinct differences. The plant produces a strong taproot to help it survive. This plant grows up to three feet in height. The stems of this plant are tough and adorned with lavender flowers from the beginning of summer through the start of fall. The stems on this plant have hair like fibers on them. The overall foliage on this plant is somewhat thin and sparse. This weed reproduces by seed.
