Retaining walls made of boulders continued.
- After your site is excavated, go ahead and start setting your first row of boulders. Make sure to get your boulders as close together as possible so that there are minimal gaps. If you’re retaining walls have minimal gaps, then there will be less of a chance of failure. When your first row of boulders is complete, pull the erosion mat over the boulders. Back fill all gaps behind the first row of boulders and the excavation area with dirt or rock. Continue this process until you reach the top of the first row of boulders. Make sure that you compact the fill dirt or rock as you go to reduce settling. Once you have reached the top of the boulders, fold back the erosion mat and re-stake it against the wall of the excavation area.
- When your first row of boulders is installed, start stacking your second row. When you are stacking your second row, use boulders that are slightly smaller than the previous row. As you start your second row, fill small open areas will smaller boulders. When you are building retaining walls made of boulders, it is important to use smaller boulders to fill gaps. These boulders will reduce failure and erosion, while at the same time contributing to overall natural look of your project.
- When you are stacking your second and subsequent rows of stone, make sure that you find the flattest side of your boulder and set that side towards the last row. This will help keep your boulders from moving back and forth.
- Continue this process until you are completely done with your project. It is important that your boulders are all secure. Before you move on with this process, secure any loose boulders that were already installed.
