Fall fertilizer will definitely help your lawn get through the winter months if applied in the fall. Having an early spring in March set the pace for this years fertilizing and weed control programs. All fall fertilizer applications are about one month ahead of schedule due to the early onset of spring. With the cooler temperatures upon us for the forseeable future, we might experience an early fall. In the past month we cut back our weed control applications because of the high temperatures. We focused our program on spot spraying obvious weeds to cut down on the use of broadleaf herbicides during this time. With the lack of rain and high temperatures, even the weeds were not growing as fast as they normally do this time of year. The recent rain falls with the cooler temperatures started kicking things into gear again.
We are now starting our early fall broadleaf weed control applications. Normally we start this application the first part of September when the temperatures drop and the moisture returns. Since we are experiencing early fall like conditions, now is the time to start treating your broadleaf weeds with a fall broadleaf weed control application. Most broadleaf weeds are actively growing now, which means that they are ready to treat. Since the grass has had a chance to recover and the temperatures are in the 70’s, burn potential is quite limited with most broadleaf herbicide products.
Fall Fertilizer
Fall is one of the most important times to put fertilizer your lawn. The nutrients that fall fertilizer provide your lawn with help feed your grass through the winter months. The selection of a fall fertilizer is also important so that your grass plants receive the right amount of nutrients as well as the right types. We recommend choosing a fall fertilizer with a lower amount of nitrogen because the top growth created by higher nitrogen rates is not necessary in the fall.
