Fall harvest time is here and winter is quickly approaching.  Fall is the perfect time to decorate your property with produce from the fall harvest.  Most gourds will last several months outdoors before they start to decompose.  If you do not break the outside layer of the gourd, it will last longer.

Fall Harvest 2

Since fall marks the end of the growing season and the transition to winter, why not use fall harvest produce to decorate your property.  Natural products such as hay, corn, gourds and pumpkins make great decorations.  Pumpkins that are carved will not last till Thanksgiving, so consider setting a few pumpkins aside.

How to use fall harvest produce in your landscape.

Fall Harvest

Decorations for fall should not only be limited to produce.  Integrating antique machinery or tools into your design will also add interest.  The goal of any decoration scheme should be seasonally appropriate, eye-catching and should incorporate a natural product.  Decorate your property in the spring with flowering annual plant or hanging baskets.  Incorporate patriotic designs leading up to July 4th.  Flags and red, white and blue colors can help you stick to your theme.  During summer you may consider changing out your annual flowers with reds and whites.  As summer draws to an end, transition your design into a fall theme.  Most fall designs usually start mid September and go all the way to Thanksgiving.  After Thanksgiving, you should remove your fall harvest decorations and transition to winter decorations.  Installing decorative evergreens in pots, will replace your annual flowers.  Use trimmings from your Christmas tree to accent the entrance to your property.  Consider installing a wreath on your door or an artificial Christmas tree in your entry way.  Christmas lights also make great winter decorations to replace your fall harvest decorations.  There should be a happy balance between enough decorations and too much.  If you crowd your display, you are minimizing the eye appeal of your project.
