The term hardscapes refers to the installation of landscape material consisting of stone or cast products. Examples of hardscapes include retaining walls, patios and outdoor living areas. Hardscapes can be created using natural or man-made products. Examples of natural products used in hardscapes include: limestone, flagstone and sandstone. Any natural rock product used in the installation of a retaining wall, patio or outdoor living area would be considered a hardscape product. Most hardscapes are constructed using cast cement products. Most retaining wall blocks and patio pavers are made out of cast cement products. Bricks are also a good example of material used in the construction of hardscapes. Hardscape projects using patio paver blocks instead of poured cement will definitely increase the eye appeal of your project.
The difference between hardscapes and landscapes.
Hardscapes are produced without installing any living plant material. The term landscape refers to the installation of plants, mulch and rock. Landscaping is the soft installation, where hardscaping is the hard installation. When installing a project, most hardscaping work is completed prior to landscaping. Hardscapes define your landscape beds and create an environment to work around. Landscaping ties the hardscape project to your property. Landscaping can highlight or accent a hardscape project.
Hardscaping is not only limited to installing stone or cast products, but it may include other accessories. Fences, gazebos and fire places all fall under the term hardscapes. Hardscaping can also include the installing of plastic edging or bullet edger’s used in the creation of landscape beds.
Hardscapes don’t necessarily have to be a large project. Small projects such as installing stepping-stones also fall under the category of hardscaping. When designing the outside of your property, it is important to find a good balance of landscaping and hardscaping. Both landscaping and hardscaping complement each other. When a balance is struck between the two, the possibilities are endless.
