After you have installed your tree, we recommend staking it. The best materials are metal garden posts 5 feet long, wire and an old hose. You will want wire that is strong enough to support a small tree, but small enough so that you can bend it. You will want to evenly install three garden posts around the tree approx 2-3 feet away from the base of the tree, depending on the size of the tree. Install the stakes with two feet in the ground and three feet exposed. Install your stakes with the flat edge facing your tree. Your stakes should be set at an angle, where the top of the stake is farther away from the tree than at the base. Doing this makes it easier to wire your tree so that the wire does not slip off of the stake. Once you have got your stakes into place it is now time to install wire. Cut three, one foot sections of your old hose off to protect your tree from the wire. Run your wire through the hose section. Install your hose section on the opposite side of the tree as the stake that you are staking it to. Connect both ends of wire to the stake so that your first wire is secure. Continue this process until you are finished. Make sure to leave your wires somewhat loose, so that you are able to keep your tree straight. Once all wires are in place and your tree is straight, you can now begin to tighten each wire.
Tree watering tips.
Once you tree is planted and staked; now you can water your tree. We recommend watering your tree with 20 gallons of water every day for the first week. In order to make sure that your tree receives twenty gallons, you can use (4) five gallon buckets of water or you can fill up one gallon with a garden hose and time how long it takes to fill up one gallon and multiply that number by 20. After the first week we recommend that you water your tree at least once per week if the temperature is below 80 degrees F and three times a week if the temperature is above 80 degrees F. If you are planting in the fall, you will need to continue watering until the ground freezes. If you are planting in the spring, you may have to water through the summer. Lawn irrigation systems do not provide enough water to adequately take care of the plants needs.
