Installing paver edging and polymeric sand.  Once you have installed all of your pavers including any cut blocks that were made; it is now time to finish up your project.  If any of your cut blocks are cut too short, now is the time to cut a new block.  Before you move on to the final few processes in the completion of your project, visually inspect all of your blocks for chips and cracks.  If you have to replace any damaged blocks, now is the time.  Once you install sand and edging, it will require a lot more time to fix the blocks after the fact.

Installing Paver Edging.

There are quite a few products on the market that are designed to secure paver blocks.  Before you install any sand, make sure that all of your edging is installed.  It is important to use an edging product that is specifically designed for use around pavers.  If you use products that are not designed to hold back pavers, they will not work.  Most edging products come in 8 foot sections and require the use of 5 stakes to hold the product in place.  Each stake is approx 1/2 inch round by 1 foot long.  Stakes should be hammered through the edging product to secure it to the ground.  There should be one solid edge and one holed edge on the plastic edging.  The solid edge should go against the block and the holed edge should go against the ground.  You can cut the holed edge in several places to allow the solid edge to form curves.  The sections of edging will interlock and they should be secured with one stake where the pieces meet.

Polymeric Sand

Installing Polymeric Sand.

Once your edging is installed and your pavers are secure, it is now time to install polymeric sand.  Polymeric sand is made up of quartz and crystalline silica which harden and seal the joints.  Polymeric sand should be swept into the joints of the pavers until the sand will not settle any more.  Once all of your joints are filled, you should run a vibrating packer plate over your patio to drop the material down into the joints even further.  Finally, sweep your patio one more time until all of your joints are filled and your patio is clear of polymeric sand.  Rinse your patio off with water when you are done and sit back and enjoy your completed project.
