Mower blades are the most vital part in the lawn mowing process.  When using a lawn mower, it is important to make sure that your blades are sharp, balanced and safe.  Mower blades will directly affect the quality of the cut grass.  Do not under value the importance of regular maintenance of your lawn mower blades.  Below are a few thing to keep in mind when maintaining mower blades.

Mower Blades

Tips to get the most out of your mower blades.

  • When changing mower blades, the first thing that you need to do before installing a new blade is to make sure that it is right side up.  This sounds simple enough, but it happens all the time if you do not know what you are doing or are not paying attention.  Installing the blade upside down can result in a few negative things.  First off, if you have a high lift blade (a blade with a sharp upward bend on the edges) it may tear up your grass if installed up side down.  The edges of the blade may sit an inch lower than normal and may cause the blade to act like a tiller instead of a mower.  Installing a blade upside down may also result in damage to your mower.  If your blade hits something, the blade may bend or break part of your mower.
  • Blades should be sharpened on a regular basis.  The frequency depends on how often you mow and for how long.  It also depends on what you are cutting, ex grass or leaves.  Sharp blades will cut your grass instead of tearing the grass-blade.  Torn grass blades will end up having white tips instead of a nice green end.  The reason the tip is white is because it is dead from being torn.  If your tip is green, your blade was adequately sharpened.
