Prepare your lawn for spring by getting rid of the mess left over from winter.  If you live in an area that receives snow, chances are that you have not done any yard work lately.  Over the course of winter your lawn may become damaged or experience a matting from the snow.  There are several things that you can to do to prepare your lawn for the spring growth.  Below is a check list of things that can be done to help your lawn recover from the winter.

Prepare Your Lawn

Prepare your lawn for spring.

  • Remove matted and compacted leaves from your grass to avoid dye-out areas.  Compact leaves can cause your grass to yellow our die out.
  • Remove sand by hand or through the use of a power broom.  If you live along a busy street, chances are that your parking area is covered by sand.  The sand left on your grass may negatively affect its growth if not removed in a timely fashion.  Power brooms are rubber paddles attached to the end of a trimmer body.  The rubber paddles spin clock wise against the grass, catching and removing the sand from your property.  If you do not have access to a power broom, you may have to hand rake out the areas.
  • Dethatch your lawn before you apply a pre-emergent.  If you have a thick thatch layer in your lawn of over 1/2 inch, consider power raking your lawn.  Power raking will mechanically remove dead grass crowns.  Power raking will also help clean up compacted grass.
  • Aeration in the spring is a great way to prepare your lawn for the up coming season.  Aeration will help reduce compaction in soil caused by heavy snow piles that were stored over the winter.
  • The first mow of the year should be bagged and cut shorter than normal.  This will help you remove any small debris in your yard and even up your grass for the spring season.
