Installing a pond or a pond-less water feature in your landscape can create a relaxing environment at your home.  The natural sound of running water tends to relax and calm people.  Creating water falls with multiple shelves adds to the dramatic presentation of your project.  A shelf is a level section contained within the fall area of your waterfall.  The more shelves that your project has, the more splashing of water your project will also have.  As the water flows off of one shelf down to another, you get the splashing effect.  If you didn’t install shelves on your falls, then your waterfall would look like a small river.

When we install waterfalls , our goal is to make the fall look as natural as possible.  By installing boulders in random areas and making your project un-uniform, you create the look of a natural feature.  Making sure that all of your pond liner is hidden also helps create a natural impression.  If you install your falls box correctly, it is pretty easy to conceal.  You want your guests to be left with the impression that the water is naturally flowing from an unknown area.  Like a magician, you can create the illusion that your water feature was always there.

Water Feature

Pond features are great if you want to house Koi.  Similar to that of gold fish, Koi are commonly used in ponds.  Depending on your climate, it may be necessary to house the fish indoors in the winter time.  There are pond heaters available to keep your water from freezing if you don’t want to store your fish.  If you have a large natural pond that doesn’t freeze below the surface, it is important to cut holes in the ice or install cat tails to help with oxygen flow.  Most koi can tolerate an eastern Iowa winter if the water in your pond is deep enough and there is constant oxygen flow.
